Surinderpal Singh (56), an Assistant Sub-Inspector (traffic), has won a silver medal at the Master Athletics Championship held in Chandigarh recently. He won the silver medal in 5,000m with an impressive time of 30.49 minutes. He had won two gold medals in 3,000m race walk and 5,000m run in the same championship in 2016. He bagged a silver medal in 2017.
Not new to records, Surinderpal said his records in 5000m and 10,000m during police training were still unbroken. The recipient of the ‘Pride of Punjab Police-Lifetime Achievement Award’, the ASI started athletics in the school and joined the police after winning a bronze medal in the Indo-Silone Games, 1980.
About his biggest motivation, he said, “I never miss out on working out and exercise despite the hectic schedule. I prefer to eat healthy and adopt a simple lifestyle to increase my body’s endurance.” He is an example for many in his age.
Surinderpal is hopeful that his achievements as an athlete would probably earn him a promotion as well. He added that he has forwarded a request for promotion through his department.
