Amritsar, August 1
As the tenure of the current Vice-Chancellor, Guru Nanak Dev University, Dr Jaspal Singh Sandhu, is about to end on August 15, the selection committee appointed by the state government has begun the screening of the applicants for the coveted post.
According to the sources at the university, 45 applications had been received by the committee for the post of VC, of which several applicants are senior academicians from the faculty of the university.
Last year, the state government had proposed one-year extension to Sandhu as VC, stating that it would complete the process of selection for the new VC during that period. But the Governor, however, had cut the proposed tenure and granted extension to Prof Sandhu for six months only, starting from February. Sandhu was first appointed the VC in 2017 by the Capt Amarinder Singh-led Congress government. His tenure was extended in 2020 and then again in 2023.
Meanwhile, the names that are in the running for the next VC include Dr Lakhwinder Singh, a senior member of faculty from the GNDU, and Prof KS Kahlon, registrar, GNDU, among others. The selection committee comprises Chief Secretary, Secretary, Higher Education, VC, Punjab Agriculture University, and former VC, Baba Farid University, among others.
