Pursuing her dream of getting good education, 46-year-old Rajini on Tuesday appeared for the Class XII exam (Arts stream) of the Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) along with her 18-year-old son at Government Senior Secondary School, Jagraon Bridge, here.

Rajini, who had passed Class IX from Arya Girls High School, Tarn Taran, in 1989, had to discontinue studies due to personal reasons. “I had to drop out of the school just two days before the commencement of the Class X examination. The urge to complete my studies was always there and the credit for encouraging me to do it goes to my husband, Raj Kumar Sathi. When our son was appearing for the Class X examination, my husband said it was the right time for me to complete my studies as we could study together,” she said.

A part-time ward attendant at Civil Hospital, Rajini said she had realised that her qualification was becoming a stumbling block in availing promotions. Hence, she decided to complete her studies.

“Two years ago, I passed Class X and today I appeared for the Class XII exam along with my son Deepak. Now, I am looking forward to complete my graduation,” said Rajini outside the examination centre.

Talking about her routine, Rajini said she had to balance household chores, job and studies.

Interestingly, Rajini is not the only one in the family who decided to study after a long gap. Her husband, Raj Kumar, who could not continue his studies due to poverty, completed his studies after 17 years.

Deepak plans to study with his mother until she completes her graduation. He said, “I help my mother with studies. Now, we will study together till graduation.”

Conquering cataract

  • Rajini’s studies were affected recently as she had undergone cataract surgery on February 3
  • Exactly one month later, she took her Class XII examination on Tuesday
