Kolkata murder case row: Chamba docs stage protest

Faculty members, doctors, resident doctors and staff of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Government Medical College (JNGMC), Chamba, staged a protest to condemn the brutal rape and murder of a resident doctor in Kolkata.

In a press statement, the president of JNGMC Assistant Professors’ Association, Dr Manik Sehgal, said, “We express deep outrage and profound grief over the incident. Our hearts go out to the departed soul, her grieving family and her loved ones. We stand in unwavering solidarity with the residents of West Bengal as we fight for justice in the face of this appalling situation.”

To protest against this injustice, the medical fraternity took out a candlelight march from Akhand Chandi Palace to the OPD block to express its solidarity with the victim and her family.

Outlining their demands, Dr Sehgal said they want judicial inquiry into the case to ensure accountability; investigation of the case by a central agency; fair, transparent and unbiased investigation process; regular press releases by authorities concerned to update on the investigation; immediate intervention by the Union Home Minister and Health Minister of India; and implementation of stringent central laws under the Central Protection Act to safeguard doctors and ensure security in hospitals nationwide.

“We vow to continue the protests as per the call given by the Indian Medical Association and other national associations until a fair, transparent, impartial and timely investigation is guaranteed. We also call upon our fellow doctors, associations and the public to join us in our quest for justice,” he added.
