Kannu Gujjar, notorious gangster, arrested after encounter with police in Jalandhar
The Jalandhar Police on Tuesday arrested Kannu Gujjar, a key associate of notorious gangster Jaggu Bhagwanpuria, following an encounter here.
Gujjar was seriously injured in the exchange of gunfire with the police. He is undergoing treatment at a hospital.
The operation unfolded after the police received inputs that Kannu Gujjar was present in the city. Acting swiftly, a team led by Police Commissioner Swapan Sharma cornered the suspect.
Upon confrontation, Gujjar reportedly opened fire, prompting the police to retaliate, leaving him critically wounded.
Initially, two weapons were recovered from the scene, said officials, adding that later six more weapons were seized in subsequent searches. The recovered weapons also include 55 live rounds and 8 cartridges, they added.
Kannu Gujjar, a wanted criminal involved in multiple cases of murder and extortion, has long been on the police radar. Officials said eight FIRs of heinous crimes are registered against Gujjar.
"This arrest and recovery of weapons is a significant blow to the Jaggu Bhagwanpuria gang. We will continue to work towards dismantling criminal networks," said Jalandhar Police Commissioner Swapan Sharma.
The arrest comes just days after associates of Kannu Gujjar were in Jalandhar to deliver a drug consignment.
A recent operation in Lajpat Nagar also uncovered links between a nabbed smuggler Naveen and the Kannu Gujjar gang, and their further links with a Pakistan-based drug network.
