Jagmeet Singh Brar, Kanwarjit Singh Rozy Barkandi among 12 file papers on Day 1 in Punjab

On the first day of the filing of nominations, just 12 candidates filed their papers for the 117 Assembly constituencies. The poll process started today with the issuance of the notification regarding nominations.

Among other candidates, Jagmeet Singh Brar, an Akali candidate from Maur, was the first one to file nomination papers. As per the affidavit filed before the returning officer here, Brar has assets worth Rs 6.79 crore, with movable assets to the tune of Rs 45.02 lakh and immovable assets worth Rs 6.34 crore, including properties in Chandigarh, Haryana, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh and Punjab.

In Muktsar, sitting MLA and SAD candidate Kanwarjit Singh Rozy Barkandi also filed his papers. A perusal of his affidavit showed that the total movable property of Barkandi, his wife and their daughter is about Rs 1.4 crore and immovable property of Rs 2.11 crore, which includes his 12.04 acre agricultural land at Barkandi village here. His wife owns immovable property worth Rs 18 lakh, which includes 3.09-acre agricultural land. Rozy Barkandi, 50, is presently facing four criminal cases in different parts of the state and Chandigarh.

In Anandpur Sahib, AAP candidate Harjot Singh Bains filed his papers. Bains, an advocate, mentioned Rs 8,0,5085 as his annunal income in the affidavit submitted to the returning officer. He has movabale assets worth Rs 59.25 lakh and immovable assets costing Rs 1.82 crore. No nomination was filed at Ropar and Chamkaur Sahib, the two other constituencies, in Ropar.

Besides, Chief Electoral Officer, Punjab, Dr S Karuna Raju on National Voters’ Day today handed over voter ID cards to Amritsar-based conjoined twins Sohna-Mohna and five more new voters. He said special arrangements would be made for the twins, so that they both can vote separately.
