Tarn Taran, August 1
Heavy rain in Tarn Taran district on Thursday disrupted the normal life. Rainwater inundated roads which affected movement of pedestrians and vehicles ferrying students and employees driving to their work places. To make the matters worse, the power and water supply was also suspended.
Roads and streets in Tarn Taran were under knee-deep water. This highlighted negligence on part of the municipal council which did not make any arrangements to drain out of rainwater.
The rain also brought relief for residents from heat and humidity. Although the rain is beneficial for farmers, they have to drain out rainwater from the fields in the low-lying areas. As per weatherman’s reports, Tarn Taran received more rain as compared to Patti and Khadoor Sahib. The rain started at 3.30 and continued till 11 am.
Many areas of the district witnessed power cuts. Harpreet Singh, Senior Executive Engineer, Punjab State Electricity Board, Tarn Taran, said the power supply was yet to be restored in a few pockets of the town.
Ravinder Kaur Ahluwalia, Principal, Sri Guru Arjun Dev (SGAD) Government Girls Secondary Smart School, said attendance of students dipped by 50 per cent in the school. She said students came to school after it stopped raining.
Harpal Singh Pannu, Chief Agriculture Officer, said 140 mm rainfall was recorded in Tarn Taran while it was 12 mm in Patti and 10 mm in Khadoor Sahib. — OC
