Farmers’ protest in Chandigarh, traffic diversions announced

Hundreds of farmers from Punjab have reached the Sector 34 Carnival Ground here to protest against the “failure” of the Punjab government to fulfil their promises.
Under the banner of the BKU (Ugrahan) and the Punjab Khet Mazdoor Union (PKMU), the protesters have been allowed to stage a protest in the sector, which is an educational and business hub of the city.
The farmers are expected to camp here for four days. On September 5, they are likely to hold a meeting to decide the future course of action.
Protesting farmers will hold a foot march towards Matka Chowk, from the Sector 34 protesting site, at 3 pm.
Chandigarh Administration has allowed a batch of 1,000 farmers of Ekta Ugrahan to protest at Matka Chowk.
Meanwhile, in view of the farmers' protest on Monday, traffic on some road stretches may be diverted/restricted, according to an advisory issued by Chandigarh Traffic Police.
The affected roads are:
Sarovar Path: From Gaushala Chowk (Sectors 44-45-50,51 Chowk) to Burail Chowk (Sectors 33-34, 44-45 Chowk) to Sectors 33-34 Light Point to New Labour Chowk (Sectors 33-34, 20-21 Chowk).
Sector 34: Traffic on the V-4 road of Sector 34 and V-5 road of Sector 34 A/B ie Shyam Mall towards T-Point opposite Polka Bakery, near Flower Market and near Dispensary will be diverted/restricted.
Sectors 33-34 Light Point to Sectors 34-35 Light Point.
Dakshin Marg: Any turn into Sarovar Path is not allowed for the general public.
Shanti Path: Traffic will be redirected from Sectors 33-45 Light Point; turn towards Sarovar Path is not allowed.
