DUSU elections: ABVP, NSUI, Left alliance slug it out, polling today
As Delhi University heads to polls, student bodies tried to woo voters addressing key student concerns, like menstrual leave for female students, introduction of Olympic-level sports facilities on campus and rent controls for off-campus hostels.
ABVP’s manifesto for the 2024 DUSU elections outlines 11 key priorities, including improvement in the admission process, campus infrastructure, and job-oriented education. A major highlight of their platform is the introduction of Olympic-level sports facilities on campus. Among its other promises are a ‘one course, one fee’ structure, large-scale job fairs, and increased scholarships for students from marginalised communities.
NSUI has presented a “student-first” manifesto that centres on transparency, fairness, and inclusivity. The Congress-backed student union is pushing for more student involvement in decision-making, fair examinations, and improved campus facilities.
A key highlight of NSUI’s platform is the introduction of 12 days of menstrual leave for female students, a first in the DUSU elections.
The All India Students’ Association (AISA) and the Students’ Federation of India (SFI), contesting together as a Left alliance, have focused their campaign on the theme ‘A University for All’. The Left alliance’s manifesto promises to tackle rising fees, implement rent controls for off-campus hostels, and ensure the functioning of internal complaints committees in every college. The AISA-SFI alliance has also been vocal in criticizing the dilution of core academic courses.
Historically, ABVP has been the dominant force in DUSU elections, securing the presidential seat seven times between 2009 and 2019. NSUI, meanwhile, has claimed the top post three times.
