Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee president Devender Yadav on Tuesday criticised the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government for allegedly using official resources to protect Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, while neglecting the welfare of Delhi residents.
Yadav contends that the official machinery should have been employed to safeguard the interests of the people and to effectively represent their case in court, which could have prevented the ongoing demolition drive and preserved the homes and livelihoods of many.
Neglecting residents
Had the government used the official machinery to advocate for the welfare of Delhi residents and presented a strong case in court, we could have avoided the demolitions that are destroying homes and livelihoods. — Devender Yadav, Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee president
“The AAP government is focusing on shielding Kejriwal rather than addressing the needs of the people,” Yadav said. Yadav highlighted the contrast with past actions, noting, “When the Congress was in power, the UPA government enacted a special law to protect slum clusters. This law ensured that slums were not demolished without providing alternative relocation arrangements, thus protecting both homes and livelihoods.”
He said, “The Delhi Development Authority has been conducting indiscriminate demolitions in areas like Khyber Pass, Civil Lines and Barapullah drains, affecting vegetable and fruit vendors, among others. Yet, the AAP government and Delhi MCD have failed to intervene and halt these demolitions.”
