Army accuses govt depts of land grab

Writes to Ropar DC, demands removal of illegal structures

The defence authorities have written a letter to the Ropar Deputy Commissioner, mentioning that various government departments have encroached upon the land belonging to them in different parts of the district.

In a letter written to the district administration, demanding the removal of all encroachments from the area belonging to them, it has been alleged that PWD guest houses, youth hostel, bus stand and even the residence of Ropar Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) was constructed on the land meant for the camping grounds of the Army.

The Army authorities further claimed that they were in the possession of a large area of camping ground at Ropar, where a canteen and ECHS polyclinic were already set up.

It was stated that encroachments were made by the Punjab Police on about 2.69 acres of defence land at Morinda and similarly on 18.79 acres at Nurpur Bedi.

In Ropar town, a PWD guest house, bus stand and the SSP’s residence have been constructed on defence land, it was stated.

Meanwhile, Ropar Deputy Commissioner Sumeet Jarangal said he had already written to the Army authorities to send their representative for the demarcation of the land concerned. They are yet to send their representative, he added.
