‘Zero-waste’ Chrysanthemum Show kicks off

Municipal Corporation sets Rs 3.5 lakh budget for three-day event, reclaims the amount by auctioning food court for Rs 3.35 lakh

The three-day Chrysanthemum Show was inaugurated by Mayor Kuldeep Kumar today in the presence of MC Commissioner Amit Kumar, councillors, senior officers of the MC and others at Terraced Garden in Sector 33.

The Municipal Corporation (MC) claims it to be a ‘zero-waste’ event, besides showcasing its different initiatives and projects and Self-Help Groups registered under DAY-NULM.

The Mayor and Commissioner took a round of stalls, including Swachh Bharat Mission where awareness is being created towards segregation of waste in four types from the source, compost of horticulture waste, home composting, Safai Mitra, construction and demolition waste material, fire and rescue services, jute bags, candle making, painting by self-help groups, ‘Naya Sa’ initiative of MCC to reuse the old clothes by selling them to the people at nominal charges after proper cleaning and ironing.

The MC has also showcased its unique initiative of making incense sticks and other items from floral waste under the banner of ‘Arpan’, being run by a self-help group aided by the civic body.

The chief guest distributed sweets to labourers and gardeners of the corporation who contributed a lot in arranging groups of chrysanthemums artistically.

The Mayor said this time the MC had organised the festival with ‘zero budget’ as it has incurred approximately Rs 3.5 lakh expenditure, which has been reclaimed through auctioning food court at the three-day festival at Rs 3.35 lakh. The MC has used reusable or recyclable things and not a shred of waste will be generated from the festival this time, he added. The Mayor appreciated the team of MC officers for organising this zero-waste event and promoting Swachhta during such festivals.

After taking round of the park, the Mayor, Commissioner and others laid flower petals at the Martyr’s Pillar in Terraced Garden and paid their tribute to the martyrs.

Speaking on the occasion, the Commissioner said 272 varieties of chrysanthemum were being displayed this year. All these varieties are grown and well groomed at MC nursery. Gardeners of MC Horticulture Department have made different animals and birds by using flowers.
