San Salvador: Salvadorans voted on Sunday in a presidential elections that’s largely about the tradeoff between security and democracy. With soaring approval ratings and virtually no competition, Nayib Bukele is almost certainly headed for a second term as president. Bukele, the self-described “world’s coolest dictator,” has gained fame for his brutal crackdown on gangs, in which more than 1% of the country’s population has been arrested. AP

Russian sets record for most time spent in space

Moscow: Russian cosmonaut Oleg Kononenko on Sunday set a world record for total time spent in space, surpassing his compatriot Gennady Padalka who logged more than 878 days in orbit, Russia’s space corporation said. He is expected to reach a total of 1,000 days in space on June 5. Reuters

Paris votes on plan to triple parking fee for SUVs

Paris: Parisians were voting on Sunday whether to muscle SUVs off the French capital’s streets by making them much more expensive to park, the latest leg in a drive by Socialist Mayor Anne Hidalgo to make the host city for this year’s Olympic Games greener and friendlier for pedestrians and cyclists. Hidalgo is looking for voters’ backing for a proposal to triple parking fees for SUV drivers from out of town. AP
