‘Normal seasonal development’: MEA on water release

India on Monday said the release of water from the Farakka Barrage across the Ganga was ‘normal seasonal development’. Downstream the barrage water goes to Bangladesh. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) reacted to media reports, which claimed that the opening of Farakka barrage gates would allow the flow of over 11 lakh cusecs of water downstream of the river in its natural course into the Ganga/Padma river. “This is a normal seasonal development that takes place due to increased inflow from heavy rainfall in the Ganga river basin catchment areas upstream,” the MEA said. — TNS

BNP: Yunus' speech lacked ‘roadmap’ for democracy

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party led by former PM Khalida Zia on Monday voiced its frustration over the lack of a "roadmap" for the country's transition to democracy in Chief Adviser Mohammad Yunus's address to the nation. Yunus assured the nation on Sunday that his government will hold free, fair and inclusive elections in the country after undertaking reforms in various sectors. BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said: "We're still in a state of confusion as things remain unclear. We had anticipated that the adviser would present a roadmap. But we didn't find that roadmap in his speech." PTI
