Kamala Harris bridges gap with Trump in prez race: Poll
Washington, July 27
US Vice-President Kamala Harris, who has begun her sprint for the White House, is in a virtual tie with former president Donald Trump, the Republican Party presidential candidate, according to a poll released on Saturday.
A New York Times/Siena College poll showed Democrats rallying behind the 59-year-old Harris as her fresh candidacy quickly reunited a Democratic Party that had been deeply fractured. Harris has an overwhelming support of 70 per cent of Democratic voters, the New York Times stated citing the poll.
The voters said they wanted the party to speedily consolidate behind Harris, who launched her presidential campaign last week hours after Biden withdrew from the race for a second term. She is, however, yet to be officially declared the presidential candidate by the Democrats.
A majority of Democrats said they felt enthusiastic about Harris as the nominee, while 10 per cent said they were dissatisfied or angry.
Her swift reassembling of the Democratic coalition also appeared to help narrow Trump’s significant advantage over Biden, the New York Times said.
Overall, Trump leads Harris 48 per cent to 47 per cent among likely voters in a head-to-head match. This marks improvement for Democrats when compared to the Times/Siena poll in early July that showed Biden behind by six percentage points, in the aftermath of the poor debate performance. — PTI
‘She will be most radical liberal prez’
Kamala Harris will be the “most extreme radical liberal president in American history” if she is elected, Donald Trump has said, as he intensified his attacks on his Democratic rival in the presidential polls in November.
