Israeli strike kills 7 at Gaza school compound
An Israeli airstrike killed seven people at a school sheltering displaced families in Gaza City on Sunday, Palestinian health officials said, with the Israeli military stating that it had targeted militants operating from the compound.
The strike hit Kafr Qasem School at the Beach camp at around 11 am, the officials said.
Among those killed was Hamas-run Public Works and Housing ministry director Majed Saleh, they added.
More sanctions possible: UK foreign min
- Liverpool: Britain would keep under review possible new sanctions against Israeli settlers in the West Bank and would act if it has to, UK foreign minister David Lammy said on Sunday, adding he was concerned by the actions that were inflaming tensions
- “I’m not announcing further sanctions today, but that is kept under close review, and as you would expect, I am deeply, deeply concerned,” Lammy said
Israel’s military said the strike targeted Hamas fighters, and that it had used aerial surveillance and taken other steps to limit the risk to civilians. Hamas has regularly denied Israeli accusations that it uses hospitals and other civilian buildings for military purposes in the about year-old conflict. Six other Palestinians were killed in separate airstrikes in central and southern parts of Gaza, the medics said.
They put the number of Palestinians killed in Israeli strikes so far on Sunday at 16.
Gaza’s health ministry on Sunday warned that all services in all hospitals could halt in 10 days due to shortages in essential spare parts, and oil needed to operate the fuel-powered generators. Meanwhile, Israeli troops raided the offices of news network Al Jazeera in the West Bank early Sunday, ordering the bureau to shut down amid a widening campaign by Israel targeting the Qatar-funded broadcaster as it covers the Israel-Hamas conflict.
