Lord Vishwakarma, the god of architecture, engineering and manufacturing, was worshipped with religious fervour in the industrial city here today. Vishwakarma Day, also known as Vishwakarma Puja or Vishwakarma Jayanti, holds great importance for those in professions like engineering, architecture and manufacturing.
There was holiday in the factories today except for worshipping the machines and tools. The workers had specially come to the workplace to clean and worship the tools on which they work throughout the year.
Santosh Kumar, a cutter at a hosiery unit, said that the cutting machine provided him and his entire family with the daily bread, so it had to be worshipped on the day. “I properly clean the machine with oil, worship it and put flower petals on it. Without the machine, I wouldn’t be able to fill the stomachs of my family. The day holds great importance,” said Kumar.
The owners of factories congratulated the workers on the occasion and distributed sweets amongst them. “The day is celebrated to honour the spirit of invention and labour. We pray for the blessings of the Lord for better future prospects, safe working environment and increased prosperity. Since our whole work depends on the machines, we pray to God for the smooth operation of our tools and equipment. The tools and machines are not used on this day,” said Sanju Dhir from Ludhiana Woollen Manufacturers Association.
