Women’s jail: Sessions Judge lauds skill development of jail inmates
In a heart-warming initiative ahead of Diwali, inmates of the Ludhiana Women’s Jail showcased a variety of handmade items, including lamps, candles and sweets which they had prepared for the upcoming festival.
The items were presented to Sessions Judge Harpreet Kaur Randhawa during her inspection of the jail, where she praised the efforts of the inmates and encouraged them to continue developing their skills.
She emphasised the importance of skill development among the jail inmates, especially as they prepare for reintegration into society. She encouraged the women to continue working on their crafts, noting that such efforts could lead to self-sufficiency in the future.
During her visit, Judge Randhawa, who also serves as the Chairperson of the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), interacted with the inmates and assured them that those unable to afford private legal representation could avail of free legal aid through the DLSA. She informed the inmates about the availability of legal aid clinics within the jail, guiding them on how to apply for assistance.
The inspection extended beyond the Women’s Jail, covering the Central Jail and Borstal Jail in Ludhiana. She thoroughly examined the barracks, spoke to inmates to address their concerns and issued instructions to the jail authorities to resolve issues without delay. She also inspected the medical facilities, conversed with patients in the jail hospital and directed doctors to ensure timely and adequate care.
DLSA Secretary-cum-CJM Harvinder Singh, Chief Judicial Magistrate Radhika Puri, Women’s Jail Superintendent Jaspal Singh and Assistant Superintendent Ravneet Kaur were among those others present.
