In a shocking incident, a woman ended her life by jumping off the top floor of the historic Gurdwara Baba Atal Rai located near the Golden Temple Complex here on Thursday. The deceased was identified as Sanyogita (35), a resident of Katra Dal Singh area in walled city here.
Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Vishaljit Singh said her family had arrived and a probe was on. He said appropriate action would be taken following the statements of the family members.
As per a preliminary probe, she came alone in the shrine. Initially, the police did not find any identity documents from her. The victim’s body was kept at the mortuary of the Civil Hospital for identification.
The ADCP said the incident occurred at around 9.30am. The way to the upper floors of the shrine opens for public at around 7.30 am and closes at around 10.30am.
The victim entered the complex of the shrine at around 9.20am and later jumped off the seventh floor of the shrine to take the extreme step.
“The primary motive was apparently to commit suicide. During the CCTV cameras analysis, she was found alone,” said the ADCP. Forensic teams have also examined the scene and took the fingerprints of the victim.
Terming the incident unfortunate, an official of the SGPC said CCTV cameras were being examined to track her movements before she took the extreme step.
A devotee said the woman earlier partook of langar at the Langar hall and offered grains to pigeons in the complex. She remained seated near Nishan Sahib for half an hour before she entered the complex and went to the top floor of the shrine. Nobody had thought that she would take this step.
Devotees pointed out that people should not commit such acts in shrines.
