Wives of 2 BJP ex-CMs bite dust in Jharkhand
The Maharashtra and Jharkhand Assembly elections sprung surprising results, with several prominent politicians, including the wives of two former CMs, failing to secure their seats.
In Maharashtra, Congress leader Balasaheb Thorat secured 1,01,826 votes, but lost to Amol Dhondiba Khatal of the Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) in Sangamner. In Mankhurd Shivaji Nagar constituency, Nawab Malik of the NCP (Sharad Pawar) managed only 15,501 votes, losing to SP’s Abu Asim Azmi, who secured 54,780 votes.
In Mumbadevi, Shaina NC, who contested on the Shiv Sena (Shinde) ticket, received 40,146 votes and was defeated by Congress leader Amin Patil, who got 74,990 votes.
Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde won by a margin of 1,20,717 votes from Kopri-Pachpakhadi while BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis defeated Congress’ Prafulla Gudadhe in Nagpur South West by 39,710 votes. Deputy CM and NCP leader Ajit Pawar secured a victory by 1,00,899 votes from Baramati.
In Jharkhand, prominent Congress leader Dr Ajoy Kumar lost to BJP’s Purnima Sahu from Jamshedpur East.
BJP leader and former CM Madhu Koda’s wife Geeta Koda lost to Congress’ Sonaram Sinku from Jaganathpur by 7,383 votes. She secured 49,682 votes. BJP’s Meera Munda, wife of former CM Arjun Munda, lost from Potka to JMM’s Sanjib Sardar by 27,902 votes.
JMM leader and CM Hemant Soren and his wife Kalpana won from Barhait and Gandey. Among other notable performers in Jharkhand are BJP state president Babu Lal Marandi, who won from Dhanwar. Former CM Champai Soren, who contested on the BJP ticket, won from Seraikela, a seat he has been winning since 1991. From Nala constituency in Jharkhand, JMM’s Rabindra Nath Mahato defeated Satyanand Jha of the BJP by 3,520 votes.
