Former Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur today took stock of damage caused due to cloudbursts and flashfloods in Kullu. He said that he would raise the issue of the sudden release of water from the barrage of the NHPC project in the Sainj valley without giving a warning with the Central Government.
“The water from the barrage of the NHPC project upstream had caused severe damage last year as well. We will raise the issue of the sudden release of water from the barrage without issuing a warning with the Union Government.” Around 40 shops and 30 houses were destroyed last year in the area due to flooding following the unannounced release of water. No warning system has not been put in place yet.
He said, “This issue was raised with the NHPC management and it was told to divert the flow of water and also channel the river. The work was done but not properly due to which a similar situation has arisen again.”
The Leader of the Opposition said that the Sainj market again suffered damage and slush entered many shops there despite less rain compared to last year. He added that the state government should relocate the market to a safer place.
