Will ensure hostel is made soon: Edu Min to Portmore school kids
Education Minister Rohit Thakur said here today that he would make personal efforts to facilitate the allocation of land for a hostel at Government Model Girl’s Senior Secondary School, Portmore, so that the students could benefit from this facility as soon as possible.
He said Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu had laid the foundation for a hostel at the school, but due to issues with land allocation, the construction had not yet begun.
The Education Minister was attending the annual prize distribution function of the school as the chief guest at the event.
During the event, he felicitated talented and meritorious students, and also launched the school’s strategic garden 2024-25 publication. Besides this, he urged all teachers to work with full dedication for the PARAKH programme, scheduled to take place in December.
Talking about the programme, he said it offered an opportunity to address the shortcomings that had persisted for three years, and with this effort, the state could once again secure its place at the top in the field of education.
“The school holds a significant place in my heart as several women from my family have been educated here,” the minister said during his address.
Thakur described the school as a “jewel in the crown” of the state’s educational institutions, stating that the school was ranked among the top schools in the state.
He also expressed pride in the many talented students who have emerged from this school and brought recognition to the state not only across India but also internationally.
The minister also discussed the efforts made by the state government over the past two years to promote quality education.
He praised the cultural performances showcased by the students, and announced a grant of Rs 50,000 for the dancers and Rs 10,000 for the singers from his voluntary fund. Additionally, he instructed that a music teacher be appointed on an outsourced basis until the permanent position is filled.
Thakur said the government was organising exposure tours for outstanding teachers and meritorious students.
As part of this initiative, students from the top 20 schools would be sent on a tour.
