Will develop unexplored tourist destinations in tribal areas: Negi
The Bharmour subdivisional headquarters concluded the Janjatiya Gaurav Divas celebrations, commemorating the birth anniversary of legendary tribal leader and freedom fighter Birsa Munda. The event was graced by Jagat Singh Negi, State’s Minister for Revenue, Horticulture and Tribal Development, as the chief guest.
In his address, Minister Negi lauded Birsa Munda’s contributions to the dignity and self-respect of tribal communities, emphasising the importance of preserving tribal culture and traditions for future generations. He highlighted the state’s commitment to tribal development, announcing a budget of Rs 900 crore for the Tribal Development Programme in 2024–25, an increase of Rs 42 crore from the previous year. He also outlined plans to develop unexplored tourist destinations in tribal areas, creating job opportunities for local youth.
Negi spoke of key initiatives like organising special mutation courts at tehsil and sub-tehsil levels, which resolved over 2.25 lakh pending revenue cases, and measures to support horticulturists through universal carton packaging and per-kilogram apple procurement.
The minister highlighted progress under the Forest Rights Act, where land leases have been distributed in tribal districts like Kinnaur and Lahaul-Spiti, with plans to extend the initiative to Pangi and Bharmour in Chamba district. He encouraged Bharmour residents to utilise state horticulture schemes for self-employment and announced plans to enhance religious tourism by upgrading facilities at the 84 Temples Complex and Bharmani Mata Temple Complex.
A new annual festival to promote tribal folk culture will debut next summer in Bharmour, featuring a shehnai competition with prizes of Rs 50,000, Rs 30,000 and Rs 20,000 for the top three winners.
The event showcased vibrant cultural performances by local artistes and schoolchildren in traditional attire. Minister Negi also visited exhibitions by artisans, self-help groups and government departments.
Officiating Additional District Magistrate Kulbir Singh Rana welcomed the dignitaries, sharing that the week-long celebrations, which began on November 15, included cleanliness drives, tree plantations, and cultural competitions. Local MLA Dr Janak Raj also addressed the gathering, emphasizing the significance of preserving tribal heritage and sustainable development in the region.
