The Ludhiana police arrested a wanted criminal after an encounter on the Chandigarh road on Sunday night.

The accused, identified as Gulab Singh of Haider village, near Koom Kalan, suffered a bullet injury in his leg and was admitted to hospital, a police official said.

Additional DCP Amandeep Singh Brar said a CIA team led by SI Gurpreet Singh was patrolling near Dhanansu village when they intercepted a motorcycle which was coming from a link road towards the main road.

Gulab tried to flee by opening fire at the police which retaliated, Brar said, adding that the accused suffered a bullet injury in retaliatory firing. He was immediately rushed to the Civil Hospital for treatment, he said.

An FSL team reached the spot to inspect the crime scene. A .32 bore pistol, two empty cartridges, one motorcycle were recovered from spot, Brar said, adding that further investigation was under way.

Gulab is facing four criminal cases in Ludhiana and a court has declared him a proclaimed offender in a liquor smuggling case. Recently, the accused was involved in a kidnapping case of a person from Shahkot district in Jalandhar and a case was registered against him in this regard, Brar said.
