Renowned Hindustani classical vocalist Malkit Singh Jandiala is set to mesmerise the audience with his soulful raga recital at Tagore Theatre in Chandigarh on January 18. The performance is being organised by Polo Hindustani Art Heritage and Cultural Trust, along with Pracheen Kala Kendra.

Singh, an acclaimed Hindustani classical artist, is celebrated for his mastery over various ragas and his ability to infuse emotions into his performances. He says, “In my performance there will be slow khayal, followed by dhrut khayal and then tarana. Each raga is a unique arrangement of ascending and descending musical notes. Ragas are very powerful; they encapsulate nine rasas like gambhir, bhakti, hasya, etc. These can generate intense bhav or feelings.”

Amardeep Singh Dahiya, founder, Polo Hindustani Art Heritage and Cultural Trust, says, “Malkit’s upcoming recital promises to be captivating as he will take the audience on a melodic journey that transcends boundaries and resonates with the timeless essence of classical music. The objective of the evening is to make youth aware of Indian traditions and connect them to the rich Indian musical ethos.”

Malkit, an MA and M Phil in Hindustani Classical Music and a PhD in Gurmat Sangeet, has done intense research on all four Vedas. According to him, “The first account of ragas is documented in Sam Veda, which is a sangeetak treatise. So ragas were born thousands of years ago.” A devout Sikh, Malkit will sing a raga of Shri Guru Granth Sahib also.

“Music enthusiasts in Chandigarh can anticipate an evening of sublime melodies and artistic brilliance as Malkit Singh graces the Tagore Theatre stage on January 18,” said Sajal Koser, secretary, Pracheen Kala Kendra. Along with the versatile raga singer Malkit Singh, the musical celebration will see national and international artists showcase their expertise in tabla, guitar, sarangi and harmonium.
