Viewer gallery of velodrome inaugurated at GNDU
Amritsar, July 30
Cabinet Minister Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer inaugurated the newly constructed Rs 71-lakh spectator gallery of international level velodrome at the sports complex of Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) here today.
Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Jaspal Singh Sandhu, Academic Affairs Dean Prof SS Behl, OSD to VC Dr Hardeep Singh, Registrar Dr Karanjit Singh Kahlon, Sports Director Dr Sukhdev Singh and others were also present.
The minister also announced 20 residential seats for outstanding selected cyclists under the Sports Department. The residential facility will provide food, accommodation and cycling equipment to the cyclists by the university under the Punjab Institute of Sports (PIS) Centre. The minister was apprised of the achievements of the university by the VC. He said at present, six cyclists of the university were representing India in the ongoing Common Wealth Games in Birmingham, UK.
‘Sports policy to aim at producing good players’
Tarn Taran: The new sports policy of the state government must be aimed at producing good sportpersons from both rural and urban areas. The government is committed to provide best coaches and good playgrounds.
This was stated by Sports Minister, Punjab, Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer, who was in Tarn Taran on Saturday to gather information regarding playgrounds and other sports infrastructure.
Hayer was accompanied by Punjab Vidhan Sabha Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan and Transport Minister Laljit Singh Bhullar, besides MLAs Dr Kashmir Singh Sohal and Manjinder Singh Lalpura and officials of the district administration.
The minister said he was of the view that good playgrounds, coaches and other sports facilities were the need of the hour. He said it was necessary to bring the youth to playgrounds to make the state drug free.
Hayer said the state government had initiated the process of recruiting employees in all departments and was recruiting 20,000 teachers across the state in the current year. He said teachers would be posted at most backward and border areas like Tarn Taran. — OC
