A day after Abohar MLA Sandeep Jakhar drew the attention of the government to a video of motorcyclists brandishing sharp-edged weapons that went viral, a case has been registered at the city-1 police station here against 10 suspects. The miscreants were planning to create trouble in the elections students’ unions of local colleges, if held. But the college managements have not given consent to revive these unions that had led to creation of rivalries.

Assistant Sub-Inspector Mohan Lal said he learnt that some students of Waheguru College were seen waving weapons to scare people that could lead to unrest in the town. Some rowdy youths were trying to spoil the peaceful atmosphere of the city, he said, and added that a case was registered last night in this regard.

So far, eight of the 10 miscreants have been identified, and two of them, Rohit Middha of Sant Nagar and Rajbir Singh of Amargarh in Sriganganagar have been arrested. Others include Behman and Shindi of Jammu Basti, Karandeep Singh and Manpreet Singh of Nanak Nagari, Himanshu of Patel Nagar and Harman Dahuja of Anand Nagari. People recalled that on April 16, 2023, some miscreants had fired outside Guru Nanak Khalsa College located on the Abohar-Malout road. The preliminary investigation indicated that some goons were hired to gain control of the college students’ union. Most of the suspects with criminal background had been hired. Three suspects had been arrested within 24 hours.

As elections in colleges are held after the Panjab University Student Council poll, bikers created ruckus by waiving weapons on the Gaushala Road and the Abohar-Fazilka road recently. The police today posted a video on social media about the arrested suspects and warned that no such act would be tolerated.
