Alleging rampant drug addiction in Jandiala Guru, a resident of the area captured the video of a woman found in an intoxicated state. She was sitting on a cemented bench. The resident posted it on social media.
After the video went viral, the police swung into action and started a drive to identify the woman hooked to drugs.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the woman did not belong to Jandiala Guru.
“The probe found that the woman in question was allegedly involved in flesh trade who came along with truck drivers at the grain market. She was hooked to drugs,” said Deputy Superintendent of Police Ravinder Singh. He said the police tried to locate her but in vain.
Nevertheless, this led the police to launch a drive to identify such women and produce them before court and admit them to a de-addiction centre for treatment.
“During the drive, we did arrest a woman who was into drug abuse. She was arrested along with three men day before yesterday. They were produced in court thereafter,” he said.
He said that duty officers have been continuously patrolling the grain market and adjoining areas to find such women. He pointed out that the Health Department should also be directed to identify and admit them for de-addiction and take steps for their rehabilitation.
The resident who captured the video urged the Punjab minister and local MLA Harbhajan Singh ETO to curb drug addiction in the constituency. He said drug addiction has assumed an alarming proportion and women also fell into the deadly trap.
