With winter setting in and border areas shrouded in haze, security forces have begun training Village Defence Group (VDG) members along the International Border (IB) and Line of Control (LoC) to counter terrorist infiltration from Pakistan.

Border districts such as Kathua, Samba, Jammu, Rajouri, and Poonch are on high alert, as high mountain passes will soon close, potentially prompting terrorists to attempt infiltration through the Jammu region—a tactic used in the past.

VDGs have played a crucial role in securing hinterland areas. They have, on several occasions, successfully eliminated militants in coordination with security forces. However, last month, two VDG members were killed by terrorists in Kishtwar district’s forested areas.

Samba SSP Virender Singh Manhas recently held an interaction with newly-inducted VDG members from border areas. “The primary objective of the meeting was to sensitise VDG members to the prevailing security scenario and emphasise close coordination with the police to ensure regional safety,” an official stated.

During the meeting, Manhas urged VDG members to complete their weapon handling and firing training promptly. He stressed that well-trained personnel are essential to maintaining security effectively.

The SSP encouraged the VDG members to work in close synergy with the police, stressing that such collaboration would strengthen the overall security efforts in the border areas.

The SSP also distributed cash rewards to VDG members who had performed commendably, hoping the recognition would inspire others to display similar dedication.
