Chaudhary Devi Lal University (CDLU) has terminated Ram Mehar Arya, a contract professor from the University School for Graduate Studies (USGS), for fabricating harassment claims and damaging the university’s reputation. Arya had sent a false letter alleging that university officials had harassed 500 female students, prompting a police investigation. The police, after recording statements from over 500 students, found the allegations baseless and traced the letter’s origin to Arya, with CCTV footage from the post office confirming his involvement.

The CDLU subsequently launched its own inquiry, citing Arya’s unsatisfactory work conduct. Despite securing a temporary court order that delayed disciplinary action, Arya was summoned to appear before a university committee on October 18 and 19. Arya failed to attend both meetings. His wife, Suman Arya, reported that he was in the ICU and requested more time, but the university found no supporting medical documentation. The administration issued a dismissal order on October 20.

Registrar Dr Rajesh Kumar confirmed that Arya had been given ample time to defend himself but he failed to comply. He stated that Arya could still present his case in the future according to university rules. The dismissal letter also had reference to previous incidents of misconduct. Suman Arya criticised the decision as unjust, accusing the university of ignoring the court’s order for a fair hearing. She said Arya had been suffering from depression due to unpaid salary and stress. The family intends to challenge the decision in court.
