US varsity prof gives thumbs up to Village Police Officer programme

Angela Hawken, professor, New York University, on Wednesday visited Nijpura and appreciated the Village Police Officer (VPO) programme of the district rural police. Angela is a professor of public policy and director of litmus at the Marron Institute of Urban Management at New York University. Her research focuses on drugs, crime, and corruption, and combines experimental and quantitative methods. Angela visited Amritsar rural areas and discussed about the project at Nijpura village. She interacted with Sarwan Singh, who was deployed there as VPO. She shared her ideas with local police and appreciated the project. Angela asked the officials to work with dedication.
The Amritsar (Rural) police have recently appointed 894 village police officers (VPO) to serve 806 villages in the district. The officials claimed that VPOs would help maintain law and order and also act as a bridge between the police and the people. She was accompanied by AS Rao, ADGP, NRI Affairs; SPS Parmar, IG Border Range;Vikram Jeet Duggal, Senior Superintendent of Police, Amritsar; Dhruv Dahiya, SSP, Tarn Taran and other police officers.
