Nestled in Shivalik foothills of kandi area, Golu Majra village in Balachaur has never witnessed a panchayat poll since October 1959.

Putting up a united face, the residents of Golu Majra village have always elected their sarpanch unanimously ever since the Panchayati Raj system came into force.

Will serve with dedication

The villagers first select ward-wise representatives. One among them is elected sarpanch. I will serve the residents with utmost dedication. Rekha Rani

This year, too, 35-year-old Rekha Rani has been elected unopposed by 500 voters mainly comprising Gujjars.

Former Sarpanch Balvir Kumar, whose sister-in-law has been elected as a village head, said, “Stay united and get elected turnwise. This was the idea of Sant Sarwan Dass, who headed Dera Baba Shree Chand. Our first sarpanch was Banta Singh. Ram Das Chaudhary remained sarpanch for 20 years. I was sarpanch from 2019 to 2024. My uncle’s daughter-in-law is the current sarpanch.”

Balvir added, “We constructed 15 internal streets, a stadium, four bridges and a dharmashala. Recently, we also distributed 50 LPG cylinders to the residents to curb burning of wood as fuel.”

Rani said, “The villagers first select ward-wise representatives. One among them is elected sarpanch. I will serve the residents with utmost dedication and ensure overall development of the village. Further, I also intend to uphold this noble tradition.”
