Under-19 sports tourney of Chamba schools begins
Highlighting the importance of sports along with education, Chamba Deputy Commissioner Mukesh Repaswal on Saturday said students should dedicate time and attention to both.
Addressing athletes at the inauguration of the four-day district-level sports competition for under-19 students at the historic Chougan Ground in Chamba town, Repaswal stressed that sports contribute significantly to mental and physical well-being, helping students become capable and healthy citizens in the future.
The sports competition, which will be held from September 28 to October 1, will see participation of 590 students from 83 schools across eight zones in Chamba district.
Athletes will compete in basketball, football, handball, hockey, volleyball, kabaddi, kho-kho, badminton, wrestling, athletics, yoga and chess, showcasing their talent over the next few days.
Repaswal encouraged the students to approach sports with the right spirit, focusing on performing well rather than worrying about winning or losing. He commended all participants, considering their victory in the qualifying rounds in their respective regions as a mark of their achievement.
He said sports and education complement each other, fostering discipline and hard work in individuals, and preparing them to tackle challenges in life. He underscored the importance of sports in student life and urged students to stay committed to both academics and sports.
The DC urged the students to take a pledge to never engage in substance abuse and to inspire others in their community to do the same. He noted that success comes through hard work, and in today’s competitive world, constant effort is necessary for achieving goals.
He highlighted Chamba district’s proud tradition of producing athletes who have brought recognition to both the district and the state at national and international levels, and expressed confidence that the district’s sports future remains bright in the hands of these young athletes.
Earlier, Piar Chand Chadak, Deputy Director of Higher Education and president of the District School Sports Association, welcomed the Deputy Commissioner. The event also featured a vibrant cultural programme presented by schoolchildren.
