Una govt college wins hockey tourney
In a thrilling conclusion to the Inter-College Men’s Hockey Championship of Himachal Pradesh University (HPU), Shimla, Government College, Una, emerged victorious, defeating Vallabh Government College, Mandi, by 6-4. The championship, which concluded in Chamba on Friday, saw Government College, Hamirpur, claim third place by defeating Maharaja Lakshmana Sen Memorial (MLSM) College, Sundernagar.
Joint Director of Higher Education, Himachal Pradesh, Dr Vidya Sagar Sharma presided over the concluding ceremony. Dr Madan Lal Guleria, Principal of Government College, Chamba, welcomed the chief guest and other dignitaries with ceremonial badges.
Sachin Mehra, Head of the Department of Physical Education and the organising secretary of the event said the hockey championship was hosted by Government College, Chamba, after a gap of nearly five decades. He said 10 teams affiliated to HPU, and Sardar Patel University (SPU), Mandi, participated in the games.
In his address, Dr Vidya Sagar Sharma emphasised the vital role of sports in the holistic development of students. He highlighted that such events contribute significantly not only to physical fitness but also to mental well-being.
He presented trophies to the winning teams. All participating players were awarded medals in recognition of their efforts. Additionally, referees, coaches, officials, and sponsors were honored with mementos for their contribution to the event.
The event was attended by notable figures including former Principal Major SC Nair(retd) ; Dr Hemant Pal, Principal of Government College, Bharmour, and other prominent people such as Indu Sharma, Ravindra Singh, Monika Thakur, Shaukat Ali, and Jai Raj Vardhan from Hockey Chamba.
