Uma Mahesh wins gold medal at FISU World University Championship

Uma Mahesh clinched a gold medal at the prestigious FISU World University Championship held at Karni Singh Stadium in New Delhi on Monday. Competing in the 10m Air Rifle men’s team event, Uma and his teammates outperformed their opponents to secure the top spot.

The 20-year-old rising star, who trains at Olympic medallist Gagan Narang’s Gun for Glory Academy, added yet another title to his collection. His achievements already include two ISSF World Cup gold medals and an Asian Championship gold, among others.

Hailing from Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, Uma comes from a supportive family who have been instrumental in his success. His father, Maddineni Rama Krishna, a contractor, introduced him to shooting after noticing his son’s fascination with the sport, inspired by its coverage in the news. Uma's mother, Maddineni Manjula, has also been a constant pillar of support, ensuring he had access to the resources and training needed to excel.

Uma trains under the guidance of coach Neha Chavan and is part of the Gun for Glory Academy's ‘Project Leap’ programme. The initiative focuses on the holistic development of athletes, enhancing their technical, physical and mental skills to achieve success at both national and international levels.

Speaking about his journey, Uma expressed gratitude to his coach, saying, "Neha Chavan has been with me every step of the way, not only as a coach but also as a guardian. 'Project Leap' has played a crucial role in refining my skills and improving my shooting. I am thankful to Gagan sir and Gun for Glory Academy for this incredible opportunity, which has had a major positive impact on my performance over the years."

Gagan Narang, the 2012 Olympic bronze medallist, praised Uma’s dedication and achievements, saying, "We are incredibly proud to have athletes like Uma in our academy who are making the nation proud on the international stage.
