Two car-borne youths allegedly assaulted a MBBS (fourth year) student inside Government Medical College here on Thursday when he reportedly objected to eve-teasing of girl students by them. The incident occurred outside the GMC library. The victim, Manmohan Singh Sandhu, is son of a senior police official in Muktsar.

The Majitha Road police have registered a case against unknown youths and investigation was under way to identify and arrest them. The accused were travelling in an i20 car (PB-02-DG-2077).

The victim told the police that he, along with his friends, was standing outside the library when two youths passed objectionable remarks at girl students. He said he and his friend Saurav tried to stop them. He said the miscreants came out of their car and scuffled with them while using abusive language. They allegedly took out a pistol and threatened to shoot them before fleeing in their car.

Investigating officer Prem Singh said one of the car-borne youths had been identified. “He is son of a manager of a nationalised bank. He is absconding and efforts are on to nab him. His arrest would lead to the identification of his friend who was with him at the time of the incident,” said the investigating officer.

A case under Sections 323 and 506 of the IPC and Sections 25, 54 and 59 of the Arms Act has been registered against the suspects.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the accused used to play volleyball in the ground on the college premises adjoining to the residence of a former Cabinet minister in the SAD government. The ground was made illegally under the influence of a political leader.
