Celebrations turned tragic for two police families in the border district this Diwali.

In the first incident, Constable Harkeerat Singh, 34, who served in the Crime Investigation Agency (CIA) wing, lost his life in a road accident while returning home after duty. Harkeerat was driving to his village, Baghelewala in Zira, when his car was struck by an unidentified vehicle near Bulle village. The impact caused him to lose control and his car fell into a 10-foot-deep pit. The police said he died on the spot and the driver responsible fled. ASI Anwar Masih from the Zira Sadar police station said an FIR has been registered against unidentified persons.

In another incident, Sub-Inspector Gurnek Singh, a resident of Fatehgarh Sabhra in Zira subdivision, suffered a cardiac arrest on duty. He complained of chest pain and collapsed before he could be taken to the hospital.
