Truck wreaks havoc on highway in Panipat; 5 killed, 1 injured

Five persons were crushed to death in Panipat city on Thursday after a truck coming from the wrong side on the elevated highway hit vehicles at four spots. The police caught the truck driver near the Tehsil Camp turn. A case has been registered against him and an investigation is underway.

The deceased have been identified as Aniket and Sooraj, aged 26/27 years old, of Pawti village; Shubham (27) of Virat Nagar and Rajender (34) of Kirari village in Delhi. The condition of another person was critical and he was referred to the PGIMS, Rohtak.

The police sent the bodies of the deceased to the victims' families after post-mortem examinations. The truck first hit a cyclist near Nagalkheri village, before hitting three youths on a motorcycle near the Malik petrol pump. Thereafter, it hit two persons on a motorcycle near the BBMB powerhouse. The truck then hit a car and the road divider, and came to a halt.

Due to the accident, a traffic jam was witnessed on the road. Four of the injured died on the spot while one succumbed to his injuries while he was being taken to the hospital. Doctors referred the injured to the PGIMS in Rohtak due to his serious condition.

Commuters were in for a shock on seeing bodies at various spots on the 4-km stretch. On getting the information, a police team reached the elevated highway and nabbed the truck driver. It was not clear where the truck entered the wrong side on the highway. He has been identified as Sahil (30) of Ferozpur Jhirka in Nuh district, said Sub Inspector Sandeep Kumar, SHO, Sector 29 industrial area. He added that the driver seemed to be under the influence of liquor or drugs.
