Marking the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi today, several social and cultural organisations, along with political leaders, paid tributes at the city’s oldest statue of Mahatma Gandhi in Ram Bagh.

Situated in the historical Ram Bagh, popularly known as Company Bagh, it was unveiled by former Vice President of India Dr S Radhakrishnan on October 2, 1960.

It shows Gandhi in a walking posture with his stick in hand and wearing spectacles that have now come to be symbol of Gandhian principles. It is also protected by a glass cover. It has witnessed the transformation of the holy city over the past many decades. As per historians, Mahatma Gandhi visited Amritsar twice.
