Trash along trekking route threatens Kullu's Shrikhand Mahadev area ecology

In the serene valleys of Kullu district where majestic Shrikhand Mahadev shrine stands as a beacon of spiritual devotion, a disturbing trend has emerged that threatens the pristine environment of the region. Devotees undertaking the arduous 35-km trek to pay obeisance to the 72-foot Shivlingam at Shrikhand Mahadev are leaving behind plenty of trash along the route, posing a significant ecological threat.

Yearly, hundreds of pilgrims embark on this challenging pilgrimage from Jaon onwards through the breathtaking forest landscapes. However, in utter disregard to the ecology of the area, the devotees often leave behind heaps of garbage amidst the greenery as revealed in a video captured by Panchayati Raj team led by Pankaj Parmar, chairman of Zila Parishad, Kullu.

The footage vividly shows the extent of the littering with plastic waste and other debris spoiling the picturesque landscape. Such neglect not only defaces the natural beauty of the area but also jeopardises its delicate ecology. Concerned over the situation, environmentalists and nature enthusiasts have emphasised the urgency to curb this practice, besides taking steps to hold offenders accountable.

“It is imperative to halt this irresponsible behaviour and penalise those responsible,” demanded Krishan Sandhu, a nature lover in Kullu. He stated there was the need for strict monitoring of visitors to deter such nefarious practices and safeguard the fragile ecosystem of Shrikhand Mahadev.

The pilgrimage to Shrikhand Mahadev, organised annually by the Kullu administration in July depending on weather conditions, serves as a cultural and spiritual event deeply rooted in reverence for Lord Shiva. However, the authorities are now called upon not only to facilitate safe pilgrimages but also to implement proactive measures to combat environmental degradation.

“The issue demands urgent attention and sincere efforts from all stakeholders,” said Pankaj Parmar, chairman of Kullu Zila Parishad, underscoring the importance of collective responsibility in preserving natural heritage sites. Immediate steps are needed to enforce strict waste management protocol, educate pilgrims about responsible tourism practices and arrange surveillance.

As the clamour for strict action grows, the Kullu administration faces mounting pressure to ensure that future pilgrimages to Shrikhand Mahadev are conducted with utmost respect for the environment so that the sanctity of this revered pilgrimage site is preserved.
