The newly constructed Mandi bypass, which is part of the Kiratpur-Manali four-lane road project, was officially opened for a traffic trial in the district today. Deputy Commissioner Apoorv Devgan and officials of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), including Project Director Varun Char, were present on the occasion.

The 8-km bypass is aimed at enhancing both strategic connectivity and boosting tourism in the area. During the trial, the Deputy Commissioner said that the bypass would drastically reduce heavy vehicular traffic in Mandi city. “The bypass is expected to alleviate frequent traffic jams that have long plagued the city, offering residents and travellers much-needed relief,” he added.

The NHAI has constructed the Mandi bypass at a cost of around Rs 725 crore. The project includes three major bridges, seven minor bridges and four tunnels, all of which were part of the trial. These structures are designed to facilitate smoother traffic flow and enhance road safety.

The Deputy Commissioner said that the bypass would not only ease traffic congestion but would also boost tourism in Kullu and Manali and Lahaul and Spiti, which attracts visitors year-round.

While the trial had been conducted, a formal inauguration of the bypass was expected when the ongoing road work from Ner Chowk to Pandoh was completed. This additional infrastructure would further integrate the bypass into the regional transport network.
