Traffic restrictions issued for Fatehgarh Sahib ahead of Shaheedi Jor Mela
Anticipating heavy footfall of devotees ahead of the Shaheedi Jor Mela, the police have issued an alternative traffic route plan. No vehicles will be allowed to enter Fatehgarh Sahib/Sirhind from Saturday (December 21). Local residents, meanwhile, can enter the town after showing their Aadhaar cards.
Deputy commissioner (DC) Sona Thind and senior superintendent of police (SSP) Ravjot Grewal held a meeting with the officials of the civil and police departments ahead of the mela, scheduled to be held from December 25 to 27.
The SSP said elaborate arrangements, including nine diversions and alternative routes, have been put in place to ensure smooth flow of traffic. She said no traffic will be allowed to enter Fatehgarh Sahib from December 21 to ensure devotees’ convenience.
No VIP traffic passes would be issued, the SSP said, adding that local residents should carry their Aadhaar cards during commute.
Additionally, 20 free parking sites and three temporary bus stands have been set up. As many as 54 police check-posts, 13 observation posts and 10 Samadhan Kendras have also come up in the city, which will be guarded by 4,000 police personnel during the Shaheedi Jor Mela.
The DC said all the wine shops, gambling stalls, dances, pandals, circuses, swings and other sources of entertainment have been banned keeping in the view the mela.
The administration, she said, will ensure 24-hour power supply, clean drinking water, public toilets and medical facilities. Besides e-rickshaws, mini buses will also ferry senior citizens, ladies and children from the parking sites to Gurdwara Sahib free of cost. Night shelters have been set up for devotees.
