The Mandi Municipal Corporation (MC) is preparing to evict shopkeepers operating sublet shops at Indira Market. The action comes after the MC authorities found that at least 58 shops had been sublet in the city in violation of the established lease norms.

An inquiry had revealed multiple instances of unauthorised subletting, undermining the integrity of the market and affecting local businesses. The MC’s lease agreements explicitly prohibit subletting of shops without prior consent. The authorities are now taking steps to enforce these regulations rigorously.

HS Rana, Commissioner, Mandi Municipal Corporation, says, “The practice to sublet shops not only violates contractual obligations, but also poses significant challenges for the management of the market. Subletting has led to overcrowding, increased competition among businesses and complications in maintaining service quality. The MC is determined to restore order and ensure that the market operates in a fair and equitable manner for all tenants.”

The impending eviction has evoked a mixed response from the shopkeepers, who are going to be affected. While some acknowledge the need for adherence to lease agreements, others express concern over the financial implications of forcibly getting the shops vacated. Many shopkeepers have invested considerable resources in their businesses and sudden eviction can cause them substantial financial and business losses.

Rana says, “We understand the challenges these shopkeepers are facing. However, it’s essential to uphold the terms of the lease agreements to maintain the market. We are committed to finding a solution that respects both regulations and livelihoods of traders.”

Meanwhile, the MC has urged the shopkeepers to comply with the rules and regulations. The MC is also exploring the possibility of offering support to those who may face hardships due to eviction.

A few influential businessmen have purchased multiple shops in Indira Market in violation of the lease terms. The market was developed to provide occupation to all local vendors, who were involved in small scale business activities in the city to earn their livelihood.
