Tourism Dept to develop sites of Mahabharata era: Minister
The Tourism Department, Haryana, is planning to develop sites associated with the Mahabharata era across the region to attract more pilgrims and tourists. This was stated by Tourism Minister Dr Arvind Sharma while chairing the Mahabharata Circuit conference at the Karna Lake on Monday, which was organised by the Union Ministry of Tourism.
During his address, he highlighted the state’s efforts to develop Kurukshetra, a sacred site where Lord Krishna delivered the Bhagavad Gita, as a prominent tourist destination. The initiative, part of the Mahabharata Circuit project, aims at showcasing the region’s rich historical heritage and spiritual significance.
“Like Vrindavan, Kurukshetra witnesses huge arrival of pilgrims and tourists, so there is a need to enhance the beauty of Kurukshetra and nearby districts. Karnal and the historic Kala Amb site in Panipat should be added to the Mahabharata Circuit for further enriching the visitors’ experience,” he said.
Sharma highlighted the works being done by the Haryana Government led by CM Nayab Singh Saini for the tourism sector and said Haryana had become one of India’s leading states in tourism development, with significant improvements being made to key attractions. He expressed confidence that future plans would ensure even greater convenience and amenities at these sites.
RK Suman, Regional Director (North) of the Ministry of Tourism, highlighted the Ministry’s mission to place Kurukshetra on the global tourism map. He said the second Mahabharata Circuit Conference and a Familiarization (FAM) Tour for tourism stakeholders and service providers was organised in Karnal for inviting approximately 100 participants from across the country to experience Kurukshetra’s unique offerings. “Kurukshetra offers a unique, enriching experience due to its deep historical significance and cultural heritage. The initiative aims at introducing tourism stakeholders to the area’s diverse attractions, including the Brahma Sarovar, Bhakti Kund, Shri Krishna Museum, Panorama and Science Centre,” he said.
