As third generation of former Chief Minister Bansi Lal’s family, Shruti Choudhry, took oath as a Cabinet Minister in the newly formed BJP government, residents of the Tosham Assembly segment erupted in joy today.

The former MP, who is a daughter of former Congress minister and BJP Rajya Sabha MP Kiran Choudhry, is the sole representative from Bhiwani and Charkhi Dadri districts where the BJP bagged five out of six seats in the Assembly poll.

Shruti was tipped to be the minister as her mother was given the credit of unprecedented victory of the BJP in these two districts.

On June 19, Kiran, who is wife of late Surender Singh, left the Congress to join the BJP. She had a long run-in with the Congress strongman Bhupinder Singh Hooda. She faced allegations of working against the Congress candidate during the Lok Sabha elections.

Hari Singh Sangwan, a resident of Tosham, said luck had finally smiled on the people of Tosham as we had been waiting for someone to represent us in the government. “Our legilsator has got the ministerial berth after a gap of years. Kiran was minister in the Congress government till 2014,” he added.

Another resident Sajjan Sandwa said they hoped that the development works would expedite again in the region. “As we were in the Opposition for the last 10 years, development works took a back seat. This Assembly segment has been a stronghold of Bansi Lal, who led the state on the path of growth and development,” he said.

The BJP has won Tosham seat for the first time after Shruti defeated her cousin Anirudh Chaudhry of the Congress by a margin of 14,257 votes. Anirudh is son of Bansi Lal’s elder son Ranbir Mahendra.
