Olympian Akashdeep Singh got engaged to fellow Olympian Monika Malik of Haryana at a private resort here on November 13. The ceremony was attended by several prominent figures from the hockey world, including former Indian Hockey team captain Manpreet Singh, current captain Harmanpreet Singh, Sardara Singh and coaches who mentored Akashdeep in his early days.
Avtar Singh, a coach at Surjit Academy here, expressed his happiness at the union of the two hockey stars. "Akashdeep was very young when he trained under me. He has always been a hard-working player," said Avtar Singh.
Akashdeep has played over 250 matches and scored over 90 international goals in his career. He was part of India's gold medal-winning team at the 2014 Asian Games and played in the 2016 Rio Olympics. He also earned a silver medal at the Hockey Champions Trophy in London. A year and a half after the 2014 Games, Akashdeep was appointed as a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP).
The couple is set to marry in Mohali on November 15.
