To rein in fleeing addicts, police post set up at Faridkot hospital

With incidents of drug addicts escaping from drug de-addiction-cum-rehabilitation centre at the Government Medical College and Hospital here increasing, the local police have established a special police post in the hospital to check these escapes.

The police were facing criticism after seven inmates escaped from these rehabilitation centre in the past seven days. In a new initiative to break the chain of drug peddlers, the police had started the practice of nabbing drug addicts and getting them admitted to the rehabilitation centre for compulsory treatment after taking their parents into confidence.

As many as 17 addicts were brought to the centre by the police in the past two weeks and seven of them escaped by adopting different methods such as scaling the boundary wall, removing a window AC or the grill of the bathroom window.

In view of this and also to check increasing incidents of vehicle thefts at the medical college and hospital, a special police check-post has been established here, said Harjeet Singh, SSP, Faridkot.

Meanwhile, family members of these addicts are accusing the police and doctors of not taking proper care of these addicts.
