Faridabad, August 31
In an effort to address the connectivity problem within Faridabad, a detailed project report (DPR) regarding corridors to connect eastern and western parts of the city has been submitted for the consideration of the state government. This is the first major project proposed to be taken up to address the issue within the city, according to sources.
To ensure smooth commute
- The project is likely to envisage the construction of two parallel corridors to provide signal-free access between the areas located on the east and west sides of the National Highway-19 and the railway track passing through the city.
- The project involves construction of an elevated passage or corridors to connect the NIT area in the west with Greater Faridabad in the east.
- Besides the construction of the access and exit points at several spots, it is likely to have provision of two main interchanges on both sides.
Prepared by the Faridabad Metropolitan Development Authority (FMDA), the overall cost of the project has been pegged at Rs 1,530 crore. The project is likely to envisage the construction of two parallel corridors to provide signal-free access between the areas located on the east and west sides of the National Highway-19 and the railway track passing through the city.
The FMDA had taken up the connectivity plan last year after the submission of an initial report by a consultant agency. Considered as a major project, it had been handed over to the FMDA by the Public Works Department last year. The project involves the construction of an elevated passage or corridors to connect the NIT area in the west with Greater Faridabad in the east. The project aims to have several elevated portions between the Sainik Colony and Sector 89. It also proposes to cross the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, likely to be made operational in October.
Besides the construction of the access and exit points at several spots, it is likely to have provision of two main interchanges on both sides, according to the officials. The project may require around 24 months for completion after the allotment of the tender, the sources said.
Though the DPR has been submitted to the state government, the file was expected to be taken up after the formation of the new government for which elections are due on October 5, another official said.
Meanwhile, an apprehension prevailed over the funding aspect, as the project not only required a huge budget but also might face problems due to the presence of encroachments and delay in permissions and sanctions from several departments as a majority of the area was either densely inhabited or had patches of green belts, it was claimed.
Though the final budget is expected to be revealed after the approval, it will be one of the costliest projects here. It may prove a lifeline for the thousands of vehicles faced with traffic chaos due to poor connectivity, according to a civic body official.
The project was envisaged three years ago in the wake of the connectivity issues due to the city divided by the NH, railway track and the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway scheduled to become functional from October this year. “While the DPR has been submitted to the government, the course of the action might be decided after the election process,” said Ramesh Bagri, Chief Engineer, FMDA.
