Three women among 5 held with opium

The city police have arrested five drug smugglers, including three women, all natives of Jharkhand, with 5 kg of opium.
Divulging details, Police Commissioner Swapan Sharma said the police got a tip-off that a gang of smugglers was operating in the city. Acting on the information, the police laid a trap at Baba Budha Ji flyover on Wednesday. The police saw five persons, including three women, coming from the Kapurthala side.
“On suspicion, the police stopped them for checking. During checking, 1 kg of opium was recovered found each person,” he said.
Sharma said those arrested had been identified as Bablu Kumar, Pardeep Vishkarma, Phoolwati Devi, Pratima Devi and Aarti Devi, all natives of Jharkhand.
He said a case under Sections 18, 61, 85 of the NDPS Act had been registered against the suspects. While there was no criminal record against four persons, Bablu was a proclaimed offender as a case under the NDPS Act was already registered against him in Jalandhar.
