This P’kula primary school has just 4 classrooms for 320 students

Only four classrooms, broken boundary walls and a tin shed — in the name of infrastructure, these are some of the ‘facilities’ for more than 320 students of a government primary school within Haripur village in Sector 4, here. The plight of students studying in the verandah in all kinds of weather conditions is deplorable.

The four classrooms accommodate seven different sections of students from Classes I to V. The elementary school has 11 teachers, including a headmaster. To add to the misery, the furniture is also inadequate, forcing some pupils to sit on the floor with just a rug under them.

“Students are facing immense hardships due to non-availability of basic infrastructure, forcing some of them to attend classes in verandah. Even boundary walls of this school are damaged. However, all our teachers give their 100 per cent to ensure quality education,” the Headmaster said.

“We had brought old furniture for our pupils from a school a long time back. Since it is large in size, it does not allow our children to sit comfortably. Elementary schools generally don’t get adequate amount of funds. It’s really unfortunate,” he further added.

According to sources, the school has made many pleas to the higher authorities for construction of more rooms, but to no avail. The school was declared unsafe more than two years ago.
